This is a map showing the townlands as they once appeared on various old maps. The map is centred on Comber. The exact Town-land boundaries are unknown but clues can be obtained from the names of the houses and other physical features. In reality there were never any actual boundaries and the best source of information was obtained from experienced postmen who knew the area well. A Policeman of times past either plodding the beat, or riding his horse doing his rounds checking the tillage would get to know the townlands. In a few country Police Stations there would be a hand drawn map in a wooden case mounted on the wall of the guard room. There is such a map in St Mary's Church, Comber but it is not on public display. Postcodes were first introduced during 1959 and since then the townland names have fallen into disuse. They are still used widely in genealogical research as prior to 1959 most parish records used them extensively. This map will give the researcher a good idea of where the townlands are situated. The accurate map reference codes will enable more detailed maps to be ordered from the Ordnance Survey. Use the Post code BT23 in Google Earth to view this area.
