Dr Don Johnston

He was born in Belfast in 1946 and died in Comber in 2025, having lived a full and interesting life. He attended Strandtown Primary School, followed by Regent House Grammar School, where he met his lovely wife, Eleanor. They had their first date in true North Down fashion at the Newtownards Young Farmers Club dance. Don and Eleanor went on to have three children: Neil, Heather, and Stuart.

After leaving Regent, Don wanted to pursue further studies, so he began his microbiology degree at Queen’s University Belfast. He then gained a Doctorate in Food Sciences. He worked in the Department of Agriculture's food sciences division, where he published several academic papers and, in time, became second in command.

Don enjoyed his summer holidays in his spare time, especially those with a purpose. He travelled to places such as the Isles of Scilly. In France, he visited Racecourse Redoubt to conduct research and experience the place where Comber’s VC-winning son, Edmund De Wind, was fatally wounded.

Don was also fond of walking in the mountains, spending time on Ben Nevis, and in the Mournes. An active man, he also liked to cycle. Unfortunately, he developed Parkinson's, but he kept as active as possible.

Don was a keen member of the Comber Historical Society for many years. He held the position of Chairman for several years. He sat on the committee until September 2024, when he and Eleanor were appointed Honorary Life Members for their service to Comber’s local history.

From Comber Historical Society, we say farewell to Don. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.
